Bee-fly

Photo: 24 March 2020

This was my earliest (Suffolk) garden sighting of a Bee-fly. I think it is a female as it looks as though there is a gap between the eyes. It seems to be Bombylius Major, the Dark-edged Bee-fly.

There is rather a good guide to these insects here.

Agree it's that species Caroline-by far the commonest & the only Bombylius sp I ever seem to see! Don't know why I don't seem to see B. discolor as that should be around? The other 2 just don't occur here in the south-east. You managed a great photo of this.

Thank you, Conehead54. I waited patiently and clicked, though I wasn't in the ideal place for the sun (the warmth of its rays apart, that is!)

Bee flies are such interesting insects. We don't seem to see many up here in Scotland.

How wonderful to get a photo - usually when I see them they are never still and I have many blurred photos! re: The Living Mountain - it is the first Nan Shepherd I have read. Not really participating as such in the reading group (I get a bit "shy" over things like that!) but am retweeting and reading some of Robert McF's tweets and some of the responses.
