Beautiful Birds (11): Oystercatchers at Oxwich

We enjoyed photographing Oystercatchers, using our monopods. This was my only 'in-flight' photo.

Ugly Duckling or Belle of the Ball?
'Ugly Duckling' apart, did you know that this group is apparently a 'parcel', a 'Rockerfeller' or a 'stew'? I love collective nouns . . . (though I'm not sure about the stew!).

I really like oystercatchers, their little white winter necklace is particularly appealing! Lovely photos, Caroline!

Caroline,

Enjoyed your photo of the oystercathers! Reminded me of canoeing along the sound in South Carolina oystercatchers nesting in all the high spots on the mud flats, some in the air like yours. Lowe tide was a nightmare getting back to shore though.

Ahhhhh these are great shots Caroline. I like these birds but they sure make some noise when they are flying over our house. I had never seen them before until we first arrived in Scotland.

Lovely shots! Must be difficult to get them in flight. Haven't heard about these collective nouns. So interesting! How are we supposed to remember them?!:)English can be so confusing!

They really have very stunning color. Love the "belle of the ball"....I'll be charitable.
