'Today in the Garden' Photo Collage

The garden today

After the excitement of our first 2021 Brimstone two days ago, we had two Peacock butterflies in the garden today. I also saw our first Bee-fly* (third row, centre) of 2021. The weather has been dry so far, with sunny intervals between grey cloud. There has been a cool breeze at times. I wonder what insect visitors tomorrow will bring.

*I have used the spelling (with hyphen) used in the Collins Complete Guide to British Insects. The Oxford Lexico version has no hyphen. Personally, I think the hyphen offers greater clarity. I have occasionally encountered 'beefly' as one word.

Always an interesting read. On a walk yesterday four or five Peacock butterflies seemed to follow us for a short while - quite magical. All good wishes ~ Mike.

Great collection of insects in your garden, it's always nice to see them back. Did see my first butterfly today way of in the distance so no photo, would say it might have been a small tortoiseshell.

Thank you, all, for your kind comments. And, Amanda, how interesting about the Small Tortoiseshell, a species I failed to see last year. I so hope our nettles will grow better this year!

Hi Caroline, it's always lovely when the insects start appearing again. I've seen a couple of bee-flies already this year (I agree about the hyphen too, on thinking about it).
