First garden 'bug sighting' of the year, 25 February 2020 |
Insects are beginning to reappear in our gardens so it seems a good moment to update my species list... I have been using iSpot to receive (and, where possible, to offer) help with identifications. A red star * in my list below indicates that the ID has either come from or been confirmed by the kind folk who use this site.
Avian sightings: unlike the Big Garden Birdwatch, a bird seen clearly from
the house or garden counts for my purposes. We have, for example, yet
to see a Grey Heron landing in our home patch, but we have had several
good sightings of these birds flying over in the direction of the local
nature reserve, one road away, and perching on a neighbour's roof. We
have often heard the local Tawny Owl, but I am not counting 'birds
heard' (unless they are also seen) at present. [R] indicates a regular visitor and [O]
an occasional one; and for wildlife in these categories I will not
usually include updates; though it may be interesting, for example, to
record first sightings of the year.
When we first moved here some seven or eight years ago, Greenfinches were frequent visitors to the garden. Some time after our arrival, and perhaps due to the general decline in their numbers which has been linked to avian trichomonosis, these colourful birds disappeared from our patch. It was with great delight that I finally saw one again earlier this year on 6 February.

I am currently reading Richard Mabey's book, Gilbert White: A biography of the author of The Natural History of Selborne. White is remembered for the meticulous observations he made of the natural world in one small corner of the country, and Mabey's account is proving a fascinating read. I would like to think that what we learn through our own observations leads to a deeper sense of respect for the natural world, and in turn a willingness to adapt in terms of making our gardens more wildlife-friendly in this age of plastic, paving slabs and patios.
great lists Caroline and that's a very bright greenfinch!
ReplyDeleteGreat news on the Greenfinch return - haven't seen one here for years. So pleased you are enjoying the Richard Mabey book on Gilbert White. Are you taking part in Robert McFarlane's reading group and the reading of the Living Mountain? Just found it in the bookcase - it is another book I have been meaning to read for ages. Read RM's introduction and just read the first chapter.
ReplyDeleteThank you, CGP and RR, for your kind comments. And no, RR, I haven't joined the book group, though I was tempted as I am rather a fan, and have three of Nan Shepherd's books, 'The Living Mountain' being by far the most well known. I love her work, especially since my ancestors were farmers in the Cairngorm region in the early 1800s (possibly earlier, too), before some emigrated to Sydney.
ReplyDeleteLove the picture of the Greenfinch …
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
